The proposal from RAISE Liguria’s Spoke 3 for Decade Action No. 34.4, “Sustainable Technologies for Sea Care and Protection,” will be part of the programs for the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030.

RAISE thus becomes a supporter of the UN Ocean Decade, the UNESCO program dedicated to protecting ocean ecosystems through the implementation of effective sustainability policies, the study of ocean functioning and biology, data generation and the accessibility of scientific discoveries.

Spoke 3 will contribute to the Ocean Decade by developing innovative solutions based on ecorobotics and artificial intelligence for monitoring the seas and coastlines. This is an important milestone that strengthens the influence of the RAISE ecosystem not only in Liguria but beyond national borders.

Marco Faimali, Director of the Institute for the study of anthropogenic impacts and sustainability in the marine environment at CNR and Leader of Spoke 3, stated: “We participated in UNESCO’s international call, fully aware of the great potential of marine ecorobotics developed within Spoke 3 which is the result of the ecosystem-based approach taken by all research groups involved in this PNRR adventure, and we are thrilled by this international recognition that strengthens the spirit with which we embraced the challenge to promote a new discipline, Ecorobotics, which in the coming years will revolutionize environmental monitoring methodologies through robotics and artificial intelligence.”

Antonio Novellino, R&D Manager at ETT, states: “This recognition represents yet another and highly significant achievement of the work of a great team that has, more than ever, stepped up to develop new high-value-added solutions for monitoring the seas and coastlines through innovative solutions that integrate ecorobotics and artificial intelligence. The synergy between CNR, the University of Genoa, IIT, and leading local companies with an international reach such as ETT has made it possible to create a never-seen-before incubator of technological ideas in Liguria, which also serves as a model beyond national borders. Recognition by the Scientific Programme for Oceans Decade bears witness to this high value and helps us to promote and export our expertise both in Europe and worldwide. The recognition is for us a source of great pride and at the same time a further incentive to develop international leadership on issues related to the conscious and informed monitoring of the environment and the seas.’
