Starting from the Milan Triennale and nominated for the Compasso d’Oro award, NUB is the travelling exhibition that from Sicily to Piedmont recounted the discovery of different ways of living, dwelling and meeting

Starting from La Triennale in MIilan

NUB: New Urban Body – Experiences of Urban Generation is an interactive touring exhibition staged by ETT at the Milan Triennale, from October 2018 to January 2019, first. ETT’s project also included the development of multimedia equipment and digital applications.

During the tour, the visitor was able to undertake the experience of creating a project for the urban regeneration of a neighbourhood at first hand and try his hand at analysing and preparing the various design aspects by exploring different thematic areas. At each stage, the exhibition has been enriched with new contributions closely linked to the context in which it is located.

In fact, the exhibition proposed a selection of interventions realised all over the world to testify the current evolution and impact of the ways of living, working, meeting and using services: a “journey” among the New Urban Bodies, multifunctional urban organisms able to respond flexibly and adaptively to everyone’s needs.

Divided into five sectionsliving, working, doing and belonging – the exhibition is conceived as a playful experience with an interactive guided tour, allowing the visitor, on the one hand, to understand the themes addressed in a direct and entertaining way and, on the other, to confront themselves with the conception of their own personal New Urban Body. The ‘players’ will be confronted with the different types of urban bodies, they will have to imagine the partners to be involved, grapple with the definition of the socio-economic performance of the initiative, and face unforeseen events and limitations, with the aim of guaranteeing the social and economic balance of their own project.

ETT created the multimedia installations that design the entire exhibition route

From the gaming application Reload Your Urban Place, which enables visitors to acquire the information they need to impersonate the role of an urban planner, to the video projections of the immersive areas (images of suburbs in five Italian cities enriched by video interviews with potential inhabitants), to the backlit graphic installations of the Lightboxes that illustrate, through images, the different phases of the design and the 22″ touch monitors that, in the different thematic sections of the exhibition, enable visitors to enjoy multimedia content and photo galleries of the areas and redevelopment projects of Fondazione Housing Sociale. Completing the tour was the Co-working Area where visitors could engage in co-working activities and explore the themes of the exhibition.

During the game, visitors are invited to create their own urban regeneration project for a neighbourhood and, by exploring the different thematic sections, can try his or her hand at analysing and preparing the different aspects of a project. The visitor, by framing the QR Code placed on special panels with the Tablet’s camera, can make specific choices based on the different aspects to be taken into consideration during the analysis and design work according to a thrust oriented towards the regeneration of spaces. The choices made will be evaluated in terms of their short/long-term impact.

If we think about the different places where we happen to work and produce, or if we observe how family time is organised according to a complex pattern involving neighbourhood networks, parental networks, public and private places, we realise that different lifestyles correspond to different ways of using space and organising time. New urban bodies respond to these needs.
