A highly innovative guide able to enrich the itinerary with hints and audio information on the main points of interest and to facilitate the visitor’s orientation in the spaces and contents
The Archaeological Park of Morgantina, the Archaeological Museum of Aidone and the Roman Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina become more accessible with two visitor apps that overcome cognitive and sensory barriers, ensuring that everyone has the right to access and participate in the cultural life of the community.
The first app offers video content in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and International Sign Language (ISL), the second provides bilingual IT/EN audio-descriptive content of the main Points of Interest of the three cultural sites signs, intended for visually impaired audiences and integrated with the physical visit through beacon technologies.
App for the visually impaired
The use of innovative Beacon technology enabled users with visual impairments to enjoy the 360-degree experience while ensuring a high standard of quality in terms of accessibility. The beacons create direct interaction with the mobile device (smartphone or tablet) on which the Application is installed, locate the visitor within the museum rooms and automatically suggest content related to points of interest (POIs) located nearby.
The audioguide also connotes itself as a visit and wayfinding support tool that allows people to explore the different themes proposed by the selected sites in an innovative and engaging way. The App presents screens with simplified graphical elements, images and text, which, through special operations, have been made readable by the device’s speech synthesizer so that appropriate audio descriptions can be provided.
Such graphic elements, appropriately “tagged,” are easily readable by a synthesizer synthesizer and able to provide easily accessible information and insights. Audio descriptions usable through the mobile device can be activated by the visually impaired visitor through simple swiping or double-tap gestures on the screen, or through Beacon devices that send simplified notifications and information to the device nearby.
To optimize the experience and make it usable even for users with hearing disabilities, without distorting its immersiveness, the application provides for the enjoyment of videos in LIS (Italian Sign Language), selectable with the sign language of one’s own country.
To expand the tools at the service of the visitor, tactile bas-reliefs of the geometrically decorated floor mosaics were made.
The purpose of the Tiflodidactic aid is to make people perceive the patterns that make up the mosaic, translating their shape and pattern into tactile values. Specifically, the mosaics being translated can be explored through two different models: the first, at a scale of 1:1, reproduces the single geometric shape in isolation from the composition; the second reproduces, at a smaller scale, the same shape within a larger segment of the design.
