Study of the exchange of carbonSouthern Ocean – Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate – Southern Ocean – Relationship between Acidification and Antarctic Ocean Warming on Climate between the atmosphere and the ocean

The Antarctic Ocean plays a key role in Earth’s climate regulation and climate change analyses because it is the area that manages the exchange of heat and carbon between three key players: the atmosphere, ocean, and sea ice. The amount of these two elements, absorbed by seawater, is constantly changing and can have a large impact on climate. This happens because Antarctica is the only area where deep water is brought to the surface, while surface water sinks to the depths: in this way, the sea surface is always chilled, slowing the warming of the water.

The goal of the the H2020 SO-CHIC project is to fill gaps in observational models caused by the hostile climate of a hard-to-reach region like the Antarctic Ocean and limitations in detecting small-scale processes. The project involves several experts working on the integration of historical data, acquired from satellites and Antarctic oceanographic campaigns, and new ultra-high resolution mathematical models to study the various impacts of climate change on Earth and suggest actions that can mitigate it.

ETT is in charge of developing and handling the data management and presentation infrastructure, a delicate task that is crucial to the success of the project.
