A multimedia journey through the history of Europe

Via Francigena ENTRY POINT”, the visitor centre located on the 16th-century walls of Lucca, near Porta Elisa, is dedicated to traditional tourism and the reality of religious pilgrimage, with a series of cultural and tourist services projecting the visitor into a multimedia journey through time and space. The multimedia set-up realised by ETT for the “MUSEUM”, in the former Casa del Boia, the House of the Master of Justice, is a visit itinerary with a brand new didactic purpose, allowing visitors to discover what the journey along the Francigena represented in the past and still today, with specific focus on Lucca.

At the Museum, an immersive experience housed in the splendid architectural setting of the ground floor, dominated by the great pillar, transports the visitor on a journey through space and time through the themes of Journey, Faith and Beauty that characterise the Via Francigena.

A highly immersive virtual experience retracing the most evocative and fascinating moments in European history. The Via Francigena is an experience of faith and life practised by millions of pilgrims from the beginning of the year 1000 to the present day and represents a fundamental artery in the evolution of European culture. In order to restore the complexity of the visual and symbolic “marvellous anchorages” that have made our country a unique environmental and artistic unicum, a narrative route has been designed in which the MEMORY of the VIA tells the story of a series of imaginary travellers who have travelled the Via Francigena over seven centuries, from the year 1000 to the end of the 1600s. Francigena Emotion envelops and engages adults and children with the help of images, illustrations, music, and narratives brought to life in the admirably restored rooms of the monumental former Casa del Boia in Baluardo San Salvatore.

Several talking pictures are installed at the “Via Francigena Entry Point” in Lucca, screens through which the visitor can interact with some characters linked to the history of the pilgrimage route. In this case, the technologies adopted for the installation consist of a screen installed in portrait mode – i.e. vertically – on which the video of the avatar is reproduced, and another touch screen that simulates the table of the tavern and allows interaction with the character.

The ground floor of the MUSEUM is entirely dedicated to a multi-sensory immersive experience. “Francigena Emotion. Il Viaggio, la Fede, la Bellezza “is a 20-minute story, realised with a 270° multi-projection, which transports the visitor on a unique journey through space and time, retracing the most evocative and fascinating moments of European history, discovering the Via Francigena in the company of monks, knights, troubadours and brigands. Imaginary travellers who travelled the Via Francigena over seven centuries, from the year 1000 to the end of the 17th century. Francigena Emotion envelops and engages adults and children with the help of images, illustrations, music, narratives brought to life in the admirably restored rooms of the monumental former Executioner’s House of Baluardo San Salvatore. Thanks to multimedia and interactive projections, touch screen supports and 3D videos, the visitor discovers the profound significance and spiritual bond that exists between the historical events that have marked European history and this road that starts in Rome and crosses the old continent all the way to Calais in northern France.

On the first floor are four educational multimedia stations, also dedicated to small groups and school classes, to explore specific themes. One station is dedicated to the discovery of the entire Via Francigena route, to be experienced through characters from yesterday and today, including one dedicated to children. The history of the city of Lucca is told with a time-line that allows one to discover its changes over time and its urban evolution. The “Eating on the journey” station is a virtual table where, by choosing whether to walk in the Middle Ages or in the modern age, pilgrims can understand, by ordering various dishes, how to eat correctly and sufficiently to face the journey ahead. A final station allows pilgrims to find out, at their own pace, how long it would take them to walk the entire Via Francigena backpacking route, as well as obtaining advice on the most suitable footwear and clothing, luggage and nutrition.
