An Accessible and Immersive Journey into Medieval Liguria
TraMe – Medieval Traces in Liguria is a project that combines accessibility, innovation, and cultural heritage enhancement. Promoted by the Municipality of Campo Ligure and funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), the initiative has made the Castle of Campo Ligure (Genoa) more accessible by removing physical and cognitive barriers and creating a new inclusive visitor path.
Technological innovation and historical storytelling have been integrated according to design for all principles, with the aim of creating an engaging, multisensory visitor experience. All content, available in Italian and English, includes subtitles and LIS (Italian Sign Language) videos to ensure full accessibility.
A Multimedia Journey Through Medieval Liguria
Medieval Liguria: Land Routes and Sea Routes
The visit begins with an overview of Liguria’s role in the Middle Ages, presented as a crossroads of trade, cultures, and political power between the Mediterranean and Europe.
- An introductory video provides historical context, illustrating the geopolitical evolution of the region over the centuries.
- An interactive touch table offers eight in-depth insights into the birth of Europe as a cultural area and Genoa’s role as a strategic port in the emerging geopolitical landscape.
- A wall projection explores the historical and topographical development of Genoa—from the Roman castrum to the late medieval city of the Rolli—through five key stages of its urban transformation.
The Four Great Families of Medieval Genoa
The second section focuses on the Doria, Fieschi, Grimaldi, and Spinola families, key figures in Genoa’s political and social history.
- A wall projection introduces medieval nobility, explaining the rise of the city’s ruling classes and the evolution of public power structures between the 9th and 11th centuries.
- A touch table with four NFC-enabled cards activates dedicated content on each family, describing their origins, alliances, and political influence.
- A sensor-equipped model allows visitors to tactilely explore the heraldic coats of arms, triggering audio descriptions and providing accessibility for visually impaired and blind visitors.
Castles and Territory
The journey continues with a focus on Liguria’s medieval fortifications, symbols of power and defense in an age of instability.
- A 3D tactile model of the Castle of Campo Ligure, powered by SENSE technology, offers a multisensory experience: touching different parts of the model activates audio content describing the castle’s history, restoration, and architectural features.
- An interactive wall map displays the main castles of the Genoese territory, the crossing routes between the Mediterranean and the Po Valley, imperial fiefs, and noble families of eastern and western Liguria.
- The experience culminates in an immersive VR exhibit, allowing visitors to virtually explore the history of the castle and the medieval village through a 360° reconstruction.
Traveling in the Middle Ages: Between Ships and Pack Animals
This section explores medieval mobility—by sea and by land—and Genoa’s maritime supremacy, rooted in unique technical and shipbuilding expertise.
- A backlit lightbox introduces medieval travel and trade routes, prioritizing readability and visual accessibility.
