The SCHeMA Project aims to create an open, modular HW/SW solution to acquire environmental data in marine environments regarding a wide range of natural or anthropogenic chemical compounds such as traces of metal (Hg, Cd, Pb, As, Cu) and nutrients (nitrates, nitrites, phosphates), of particular importance to the carbon cycle, volatile compounds, toxins, and toxic algae. The SCHeMA system therefore consists of a network of wireless or cabled or plug&play chemical sensors that acquire high-resolution spatial and temporal info on the quality and state of water, checking for the presence of compounds that are potentially harmful to health.
