Artificial intelligence to support Sicily’s cultural heritage

The Maritime Station of Messina, built between 1937 and 1939 and designed by architect Angiolo Mazzoni, is a striking example of rationalist architecture, characterized by grand spaces and a bold, linear design. On the second floor, the Salone dei Mosaici—clad in travertine—hosts a large mosaic restored in 2006. Created by artist Michele Cascella, the work illustrates historical, social, and environmental aspects of Sicilian tradition.

The island’s millennia-long history is depicted through a figurative narrative of its most significant periods, from classical antiquity to the early 20th century.

ETT has breathed new life into the artwork—and into one of its key figures, Archimedes—through the use of artificial intelligence.

Archimedes becomes the animated protagonist of a video created with digital animation techniques. Through his storytelling, the mosaic comes alive, offering a dynamic narrative that anticipates the creation of the future Museum of Navigation by the Fondazione Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane.

Based on his depiction in the mosaic, Archimedes was reimagined in a cinematic style, animated, and integrated into a CG video that brings together art, technology, and historical narrative.
