BIS! Good, Smart and Sustainable

To promote, through a true alliance between public institutions and Associations, greater awareness of the value of food and to contribute to the reduction of food waste through the dissemination of the food-bag in catering.

As part of a broader project on food waste reduction funded by MITE, ANCI, in collaboration with federazione Italiana Cuochi, promoted the BIS! communication campaign carried out by ETT nationwide.

The campaign, envisaged by Law 166/2016 on food waste, set itself the challenge of engaging food service establishments toward adopting measures and communication tools — aimed at their customers — that actively promote the virtuous practice of taking away leftover food in commercial catering the so-called food-bag.

Thanks to the collaboration with the CIAL (Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi in Alluminio – National Consortium of Aluminum Packaging), participating restaurant businesses received a “welcome kit” consisting of about 200 take-away containers, thanks to the support of CIAL – Consorzio Nazionale Imballaggi Alluminio, and communication materials – window sticker, poster, counter sign – to be used in their premises.

Participating restaurateurs then used the web app specially developedby ETT to record from their smartphones or PCs the trays delivered to customers with uneaten food. The small sizes of the containers provided for the trial were designed to curb the risk of misuse, as they are not suitable for storing quantities of food in excess of normal meal leftovers.

In addition to creating the name, logotype, claim, copy, playbill, poster and the website sprecoalimentare.anci.it that supports the campaign and the awareness-raising activities activated by restaurateurs towards their customers, a number of communication materials (audio ads, video pills, web banners, graphic materials that can freely be downloaded from the project website) have been prepared..

The campaign was preceded by a trial phase – lasting 1 month – that involved restaurateurs in adopting communication measures and tools to promote the virtuous practice of taking away leftover food among their customers.

As evidence of the correct functionality of the application, different types of verification were carried out beginning with tests on different types of devices (PC/tablet/Android and iOS smartphones) to verify the correct technical operation and the possibility of accessing the tool depending on the user’s technological availability.
