THE OCEAN RACE GENOA – THE GRAND FINALE: SUNDAY AT THE PORTO ANTICO

LIVE BROADCAST OF THE DEPARTURE FROM ALICANTE

Genoa “calling” Alicante: on Sunday, the start of The Ocean Race No. 14

It’s a party at the Old Port with a big-screen live broadcast of the start

Genoa, 12 January – In the Old Port (Porto Antico), Genoa salutes The Ocean Race crews during their departure on Sunday at 13:30, with a live broadcast of the departure from the port of Alicante. On the LED wall erected in front of Palazzo San Giorgio, the pictures of the double start will show the event (the VO65s start at 14:00, including the Genoa Team, and the Imoca class at 16:00). There will also be video contributions arriving from Alicante, where the Genoa Pavilion is set up to host numerous events and activities.

In this way, the Genoese will see the sailors (two Italians, Cecilia Zorzi and Alberto Riva) who will compete under the flag of San Giorgio (St George) and also see the remarkable pictures coming from the Ocean Live Park in Spain. The village will travel around the world until the Grand Finale in Genoa from 24 June to 2 July on the East Waterfront.

There will be entertainment in the Old Port, with music, Hip Hop performances and tasting offered by the organisers of the World Pesto Championship. The public will also be involved in the draw for a special place aboard Team Genova in the Pro-Am regattas that will be held during Genova The Grand Finale.

The Ocean Live Park in Alicante and the Genoa Pavilion (Pavilion di Genova) have been taken by storm in these first few days, with more than 60,000 visitors during the first weekend. The activities promoted by the city of Genoa were greatly appreciated. These included the immersive camera– emotional connection of visitors with content – set up by ETT, spectacular and recurring videos showing Genoa and Liguria, and “Virtual Reality” viewers to explore the Old Town of Genoa, with its squares and some buildings.

The 150-square-metre Genoa Pavilion permits exploration of the beauties of the city and all of Liguria. This unique opportunity will be repeated after each leg: Cape Town, Itajaí, Newport, Aarhus and The Hague. Alongside The Ocean Race, Genoa will tangibly promote sustainability and the protection of the seas and, thanks to the “Genova Process”, will write the first draft of the Charter of Rights for the Oceans which will be presented to the UN after the Grand Finale.

The countdown is now complete. On Sunday, The Ocean Race turns 50 and launches the 14th crewed round-the-world race; the most exciting and demanding regatta – the Everest of sailing – which for the first time will historically arrive in Italy. And Genoa is ready for the “Grand Finale”.
