The strategic use of Artificial Intelligence, guided by human touch, constitutes a revolutionary experience, a new and fascinating method of animating the work of art and bringing an ever wider and more diverse audience to its enjoyment

At the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata in Palazzo Lanfranchi, one of the three locations of the National Museum of Matera, the ground floor houses the museum’s masterpiece, the Levi Room. Inside is the large painting Lucania ‘61, commissioned from the famous Italian writer and painter Carlo Levi to represent Basilicata in the great Exhibition of the Regions held in Turin in 1961, on the occasion of the centenary of the Unification of Italy.

Thanks to an innovative Extended Reality workstation, based on a skilful combination of art, creativity and Artificial Intelligence (AI), ETT recreated a highly innovative multimedia installation capable of enhancing the paintings of Carlo Levi, spokesman of the Southern question after World War II, and involving visitors in a fascinating immersive experience.

The Carlo Levi collection exhibited in the museum is made up of forty-four paintings, which show the painter’s artistic experience and his ability to capture and express the soul of the peasant civilisation of the South and, in particular, of Basilicata: starting from Levi’s paintings, a new work of art is created through the use of Artificial Intelligence within an immersive room with video projections and rear-projections.

When the visitor enters the room, through a presence sensor, an evocative Extended Reality experience based on the use of Artificial Intelligence will be activated, appropriately guided by human prompts, to create a new artistic narrative, centred on the shapes, colours and characters portrayed in Carlo Levi’s paintings on display in the Museum.

The AI system used, Stable Diffusion, a deep machine learning model that exploits the text-image combination, enables the creation of images from accurate and contextualised textual descriptions.

As the paintings portray landscapes, houses, faces imbued with humanity, patient work and the courage to exist, in the small but intense space of the canvas, so the Extended Reality experience transports and engages the visitor in a vortex of colours, images, sounds and emotions.

The unprecedented creative work takes the details, landscapes and characters portrayed by Levi and elaborates, expands and transforms them to immerse the visitor in a whirlwind of images, emotions and sensations, made even more vivid by the original soundtrack that emphasises and enriches the pathos.

The artistic characteristics of the work extend towards the visitors, placing them at the centre of the Extended Reality experience and enveloping them in the colours, graphic signs, atmospheres and emotions of Levi’s paintings, making them alive and real, capable of arousing highly evocative feelings.

The creation of a permanent immersive room dedicated to an Extended Reality experience, implemented through the use of AI, represents a highly innovative installation: the first case in which AI is used in a permanent museum context and not in the context of temporary exhibitions.

Also inside Palazzo Lanfranchi, two multimedia touch-screen tables dedicated to gamification and the reproduction of the canvas Lucania ‘61 by Carlo Levi with 220,000 LEGO® bricks complete the new educational space, while three new multimedia rooms enrich the museum experience. In the Guerricchio Room, a video-narration involves the visitor in the discovery of the works, while in the d’Errico Room a multisensory experience enriches the enjoyment of the collection with a large full-wall projection.
