The project
The BE.PI (Smart Pill Dispenser Hospital) project will develop a “smart” pill dispenser that can track the medication and the actions of healthcare personnel by scheduling the administration, so that the patient, usually elderly and often suffering from multiple chronic diseases, can follow the multi-drug therapy independently in controlled doses and at set times.
The project responds to the demographic evolution of recent years that sees an increase in the elderly population and consequent age-related diseases such as chronic diseases, frailty, and disability.
The target territory is Liguria, the Italian region with the highest rate of over-64s; the percentage is 28.4 percent compared to the Italian average of 22.6 percent.
The health care system needs more support to efficiently manage the large volume of patients due to this changing demographic, and the creation of a pill vending machine is one solution.

Attività
The five lines of activities enable the realization of the project:
- Pre-requirement analysis: preliminary study of the development of the dispenser and software system to define the design and functionality of the components, hardware and software starting from the needs of the end user.
- Technology platform design and functional specifications: identification and definition of the software architecture and implementation of the latter in the dispenser. The general interface will be established that will activate and make functional the core units of the new solution and two dispensing units (dispensers), as well as the user interface part with the dedicated sensors.
- Design of platform modules and prototype: establish individual functional modules of the software and implement their functionality to validate an already functional solution in the laboratory. Activities include system monitoring and control, integration of digital medical records, implementation of modules for telepharmacy and telemedicine management, design and specification of the integration of the Single Therapy Sheet module with the smart pill dispenser, and laboratory validation.
- Integration and validation of the demonstrator: integration of the system in its complexity, uniting the ICT part with the structural component through the creation of the integration environment, definition of interfaces and data, implementation of the new features of the Single Therapy Sheet module, dashboard and integration with the smart pill dispenser, and integration and validation of the demonstrator. Finally, the prototype will be validated in the healthcare setting
- Coordination, Dissemination and Exploitation of Results: the dissemination of results is crucial because of the strong impact the project will have on the Ligurian territory and on the perception of regional health services due to the optimization and personalization of care. In addition, the socio-economic impact both in the regional territory can lead to the export of the project at the national and European level in facilities that house not only the elderly and chronically ill but also patients who need regular and even multiple therapy administrations.
Features
The smart pill dispenser prototype includes:
- integration of data from patients’ medical records
- design and specification of the integration of the Single Therapy Sheet module
- implementation of telepharmacy and telemedicine management modules for correct and timely dispensing
- dashboard that allows the healthcare professional to monitor Smart Pill performance and dispensing
