The Project

BaaS (Bus as a Sensor) aims to respond to the challenges that urban and suburban mobility are facing by optimizing the comfort and sustainability of Local Public Transport. A prototype will be built to monitor safety, passenger comfort, and vehicle conditions through cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twin, and Multimedia. These solutions will complement and improve the management and enjoyment of current AMT systems; in fact, data on transportation service, surroundings, and statistics on vehicle and network use will be accessible to the service manager and passenger in real time and geolocated.

This information will be captured through surveillance cameras and sensors and will be integrated into the developed IoT platform.

An innovative, interactive and inclusive approach for more sustainable mobility that meets the needs of the operator and the citizen by making public transport more efficient and more attractive.

Activities

The activities planned within the project will be divided into four phases of work, the Work Packages, which will allow the innovative aspects described above to be studied and implemented. The project partners will provide their expertise to define the most appropriate actions to achieve the expected results and exploit the technological advances made.

WP1: analysis of the state of the art in the field of study, prerequisites will be assessed, enabling technologies will be defined, and KPIs will be chosen on which the final results will be evaluated at the end of the project

WP2: industrial research phase through assessment of skills and organization, study of system architecture and design of platforms.

WP3: experimental development activities of the project. The whole system will be tested and validated after setting up a demonstrator comprising different modules such as: physical hardware and on-board sensoristics of one or more AMT vehicles (electric buses), software for audio-video and passenger comfort data analysis, data collection modules, communication modules for data transmission and exchange, and dashboarding modules for the transport operator.

WP4: project management and technical and scientific coordination. Communication and dissemination of results, involvement of end-users and stakeholders, distribution of information and information materials, and the data lake that will enable appropriate data management will also be part of WP4 activities.

The role of 490 Studio, an ETT Group company

As part of the BaaS project, 490 Studio serves as a point of reference for defining the architecture for data collection and management and creation and delivery of information and insight content.

All installed sensors and collected data will be processed in accordance with the requirements imposed by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
