The life and history of those who lived and worked until the last century in the houses and factories of the UNESCO working-class village

ETT carried out the restyling of two rooms dedicated to experiencing the new museum itinerary of what was historically the Crespi d’Adda Worker’s Village school building, home to one of Lombardy’s most important textile mills in the second half of the 19th century.

The itinerary delves into the life and history of the people who lived and worked until the last century in the houses and factories of the working-class village of Crespi D’Adda (UNESCO site), starting from the voices of the protagonists
recounting the events of the time while also giving ample scope to the historical-industrial context of our country.

An installation of suspended red cotton threads, imitating the weaves of a loom that recall the main activity of the Village, guides the visitor along the entire route.

Completely annihilated by the absence of color and light, three large screens allow for the projection, in the first room, of five full-scale historical characters (Silvio Benigno Crespi, a child, a doctor, a parish priest, and a worker) who inhabited the village in 1930.
In the darkened room, through spot lights, the five representative objects for each of these characters are illuminated. Simultaneously, by lifting one of the objects, through a capacitive sensor system, the lights are turned off and an actor comes to life within the projection, speaking about that very object held in his or her hand.
Each one tells about his or her life through words, emotions and by brushing the everyday crespese.
In the second room, through infographic storytellinga different communicative mode was explored to tell the events and themes related to the history of Crespi d’Adda, creating parallels with other working-class contexts of the time through video projections made with stock images activated through a capacitive sensor system.

The goal is to tell the stories and themes related to the history of Crespi d’Adda not widely covered during the guided tours: the relationship of the Crespi family with the trade unions and the historical context of the postwar period, the theme of innovation and what is called Crespi welfare through insights into the historical events that occurred between 1878 and 1930 in Crespi d’Adda – but not only. By touching certain sensitive points of the exhibit structure, visitors can bring the filmic reproduction of the contents to life.
