An immersive Virtual Reality experience to explore the Gianna Mine and relive the formation of the Alps through all its stages
ScopriAlpi Comes to Life in VR
The project “Making the Invisible Visible”, promoted by Fondazione La Tuno, offers a 360° Virtual Reality experience inside the Gianna mine, which can be visited at the Ecomuseo delle Miniere e della Valle Germanasca. The experience takes visitors nearly two kilometers underground, where they can witness the geological evidence of the tectonic contact between the African and European plates, the process responsible for the formation of the Alps around 65 million years ago.
Through virtual reality, visitors are immersed in a journey across the stages of orogenesis: from the vast movements that split Pangaea to the forces that, over millions of years, shaped the mountains and landscapes we see today. With spectacular 3D reconstructions, graphic elements, and infographics, geological processes come to life in a clear and captivating way.
An Immersive Journey Through Science and Technology
The VR experience completes the approximately three-hour tour of the talc mine, providing a 360° immersive impact that illustrates the formation of the mountains and the key stages of Alpine orogeny, from the movements of Pangea to the creation of the Alpine arc. All content is supervised by the Ecomuseum’s scientific team, combining 3D reconstructions, simplified graphic elements, wireframes, and infographics, along with internal and external 360° drone footage, all accompanied by an original multisensory soundtrack.
Accessible to Everyone
The 12 VR headsets available at the entrance allow all visitors, including those with mobility impairments or unable to take the train ride, to fully experience the mine and the virtual journey through the history of the Alps in an engaging and memorable way.
